Wheat Field with Cypresses
Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890)
Year
1889
Medium
Oil on canvas
Seen at
The Met, New York
Painted from the asylum at Saint-Rémy in the summer of 1889, when Van Gogh was lucid enough to work outdoors. The wheat, the clouds, the cypress — each rendered with the same dense, directional brushwork, so that the wind moving through the field is the same wind moving through the sky. He considered the cypress series among his best work.
