A philosopher contemplates a poet across centuries. Aristotle rests his hand on a bust of Homer — touch as a form of communion with the dead. The gold chain marks his worldly success; his expression marks his ambivalence about it. Rembrandt was nearly bankrupt when he painted this, which may be the point.
