Painted near the end of Turner's life, when his work had begun to dissolve into pure light and atmosphere. The whale itself is barely a smudge; the ship, the sea, the sky, all melt into one weather system. Turner submitted this to the Royal Academy in 1845; reviewers complained they could not tell what was happening. That, in many ways, was the point.
